San Diego Model Railroad at Balboa Park

One of the most surprising gems of Balboa Park is the San Diego Model Railway Museum. It’s a bit of fun, sure, but what it really is, as you get into it, is a TON of fun.

They have a few different rooms, each with a different scale and/or theme. You seem some smaller ones, some slightly larger ones, but as you make your way to the back, what you ultimately see are the most amazing ones. The ones they should have led with. The ones the whole place should revolve around.

See, it’s impressive that they can make scale accurate stuff, regardless of the scale. It’s impressive (if not a bit frustrating) that they’re such purists that many of their volunteers are disallowed from working on projects because their vision doesn’t wholly align with more senior members. All that I get.

But what’s most amazing is the room in the back. It’s easy to spot because it’s where everyone is, and it’s the most amazing because it’s an “anything goes” room where you can see Disney characters riding trains alongside those from the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and really anything else you could possibly dream up.

This is where the lights are brightest and the kids are most delighted. This is where, if not ALL the magic happens, then the overwhelming majority at least.
