Wii Review: New Super Mario Brothers

I’ve had a bit of a love-hate relationship with Nintendo, in that they treat me like a pestering step-child, and rarely even bother to send me press releases. I worked around them to get a review copy of Super Mario Galaxy Two, which I’d heard was great… and yes, it’s great… no, it might even be better than that.

The Wii platform has been a bit forgotten, as new games are using more taxing graphic engines. As a result, you look at something like the latest titles from “Call of Duty” or “Need for Speed” and you’ll find that it’s the exact same game you can get on PS3 or Xbox, but with significantly, unavoidably, un-ignorably worse graphics.

Does Wii have the best graphics on the market? No, not by a mile. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some really great titles still left on the Wii, and one such offering is Super Mario Galaxy Two… which is plain fantastic.

The graphics are plenty good, but it’s really the innovation of the game that really rock the review, and tilt it way in the favor of demanding that you should buy it.

This game has all kinds of fun in terms of puzzle solving and learning new skills as the levels go on, but what’s really great about it is the repeat playability. You can play this game all the way through, or all the way through and then some, or all the way through, and then some, and then some more.

For this $50 title, you can count on a solid 200+ hours of play, even if you’re a dedicated gamer.

That means that you shouldn’t rent this game, because doing so will barely save you money, if any pennies at all. You should buy it, play it to death, and then sell it when you’re done.

The graphics are good, the levels are clever, and the repeat playability is just about second-to-none.

On a buy it; rent it; steal it chart, this game is a definite “buy it”, as much as I dislike Nintendo for their treatment of publicity and PR in general.
