Would You Buy This Sickly Child Even Just a Meal?

Dominic isn't sick, he just sympathizes with his brother who hasn't a single hair on his body. That's a real show of courage.

When summer came, the boys were due for haircuts. We let each of them choose what they wanted. Some choose more liberally than others. So I ask you, would you buy this bald kid a meal?

His oldest brother has no hair whatsoever, not even eyebrows or eyelashes, so maybe that played into it. Dominic chose for the summer to shear his head bald, and we let him.

Our first stop on the way to our Idaho summer tour season was a killer little truck stop just outside of Seattle along I-90. Free second helpings on most anything on the menu, though they offer it knowing you’d be hard pressed to finish the first round they bring you.

We were a tad loud and rowdy for my taste. I kept trying to keep the boys in line, but apparently we were noticed by adjacent diners in ways we couldn’t even imagine at the time.

“Miss!” I finally said to the waitress, “Can we please have our check?”

Abashed, she explained that, “No, somebody else has paid for your meal and they don’t want to be identified. You’re already paid.”

Um… what? I guess having two bald children at the table (one naturally, another by choice,) apparently we’re hosts to sickly children, I guess? Our bill was only about $35, so it’s not like it’s a big thing, but I was still a bit annoyed. Had I known, I’d have ordered the double ranch burger on somebody else’s dime.

No, that’s not true.

The truth is, we really do have on boy with myriad health issues, and he hasn’t had a hair on his body in the 14-years since his 6-month birthday. We love him to bits, but he does have some challenges.

And Dominic did decide he wanted to shave his head in equal parts solidarity with brother and to look like a badass… well, he does indeed look like a badass.

Bottom line is we didn’t just save $9 on a hair cut, we also saved $35 off our dinner.

And to you kindly, random strangers (and we know who you are, we locked eyes in the parking lot for far too long,) thank you for just being awesome, caring people. We’re strangers but that didn’t stop you from your random act of kindness and it made a pretty trying day a pretty unforgettable one.
