Kids Can Lose Bug-Fear Thanks to… More Bugs

When I was younger I was sometimes afraid of bugs. Not all of them, but most I think. What can I say, they’re creepy and kind of gross. No parent wants their kids afraid of bugs, so mine did the only thing they could think to do; they took me outside during the summer. Mere exposure apparently does work wonders to acclimate young folk such as me to earth’s other creatures, and for me I can say it worked very well indeed.

On the particular day when my bug-fears were laid to rest, we were living it up larger than life in the waning days of summer at the Electric City Waterpark in wonderful Great Falls, Montana. It’s a great park, as you’ll soon read in a related article, but as is true of any outdoorsy place, it had an ant or two.

Unlike brother Patrick who exercised cautious distance even from his own shadow, once I saw the ants, or as I called them, my “Ant Buddies,” I grabbed them and put them on my skin. They aren’t biters, so letting them wander my ivory surface could at worst cause tickling, though at best it brought me to an understanding with them.

It was extremely disappointing when they teleported away from me, even though I kept getting told my friends had walked from places I could see (like my hand) to places I couldn’t (like my elbow, tricep and armpit areas.)

When your parents tell you that your bugs are just as afraid of you as you are of them, they aren’t kidding. These guys could have freaked out and headed for the hills (probably my buttocks for all I know) but they didn’t. They knew they weren’t in a dangerous place, just an odd one, specifically my surface.

I let them run all over me and the worst fates I faced were some unexpected micro-tickling and the occasional can’t-find-‘em moments when I thought I’d lost my ant buddies.

The novelty wore thin for them long before it did for me, so with some convincing, I let them go to a better place… no, not death, but back to the ground where they seemed much happier searching for scraps of food or other bugs to feed their colony during the short months of warmth characteristic so far north in Montana.

If you are afraid of bugs, encourage your parents to let you spend some time outside. When you find bugs, don’t kill them or run from them, but give them a chance to co-exist with you and you’ll likely find what I did. That they don’t “bug” you at all. They’re just going about their lives, as you do, and we really can all live together on this big planet of ours.

And in case you’re curious, there was no parental editorial oversight on the naming of my tiny friend. It was me that named him my “ant buddy,” and me that pointed out that something so tiny and kind wouldn’t hurt me… and I was right… what can I say, I always am.
